Ash is experienced enough, but he has been less active and they could not have known that the clue would leave him in particular safe. Ankh expressed a reluctance to eat from the clue, despite the fact that the remaining sheep from the clue would be safe. It does not implicate him, precisely, but it is a consistent line of reasoning.
